Non Verbal Reasoning

Non verbal reasoning is all reasoning that is not verbal reasoning and verbal reasoning is the ability of reasoning by using concepts framed in words. So actually non verbal reasoning is a term which stands for a broad range of reasoning skills like e.g. abstract reasoning, diagrammatic reasoning, spatial, numerical reasoning and many more.
   Non-verbal reasoning involves drawing conclusions based on a set of facts either fictional or non fictional. Exercises include activities like describing the similarities and differences between two pictures, finding the shape that does not belong in a sequence of shapes, predicting what shape should next appear in the sequence, and so on. Non-verbal reasoning exercises can also include numerical activities. In our everyday life even though speech is the most obvious form of communication. One’s non verbal reasoning skills are an invaluable asset, since people are constantly bombarded by non verbal impulses, signals and gestures. Actually people use their non verbal intelligence much more than their verbal intelligence. Almost everything you will encounter in life you will first judge by visual interpretation, because this is simply the easiest, fastest and it can be done without drawing attention to oneself. So your first impression of something or somebody is almost always based on your non verbal reasoning skills. For example if you try to judge somebody on their looks you are actually using non verbal reasoning to do this.
    Non-verbal reasoning is also called fluid reasoning. It is an intentional cognitive process that does not occur automatically. It involves the use of deliberate and controlled mental operations to solve  problems. Mental operations often include drawing inferences and forming concepts when language is not involved. This of course can be practiced and non verbal intelligence can be trained. 

Verbal Reasoning

People generally assume that their verbal reasoning skills are relatively sharp because they engage in conversations and engage in at least some light reading regularly. The differentiation between someone with poor verbal reasoning skills and someone with excellent verbal reasoning skills lies in one's ability to read or listen critically and to pick out pertinent information. Pertinent information can include known facts, specific opinions, statistics, sources, fallacies, and the like.
   Tests for verbal reasoning skills, especially those on standardized tests, usually take the same form. Such tests determine one's ability to understand question, to differentiate facts from assumptions, and to think logically.
   Individuals use their verbal reasoning skills in various ways at work, mainly through oral communication and/or reading written information. Strong verbal reasoning skills are a key prerequisite for many different jobs that involve frequent communication (emails, reports, or oral communication) and the ability to quickly and effectively interpret complex verbal information. When recruiting for many job roles there is a need to differentiate those with high verbal reasoning ability from those with poor verbal reasoning skills. Sales personnel, for example, require persuasive verbal reasoning skills, and managers must adapt their communication style depending on their audience. Thus, many employers now make extensive use of verbal reasoning tests as a key part of their standard recruitment processes.
   Verbal reasoning tests allow employers and university admissions officers to assess such skills of a large number of applicants in a standardized way. The same verbal reasoning test is given to a large number of applicants, which increases the fairness of the application process – whilst also making the process more efficient.  A well-designed verbal reasoning test offers both a reliable and a valid means of assessment.
   These tests are widely used since most jobs require you either to understand and make decisions based on verbal or written information or to pass this type of information to others. In practice, the more straightforward types of question (spelling, grammar and instructions) tend to be more applicable to administrative roles and the reasoning and deduction type of questions to management roles.

Verbal Reasoning Preparation

Like any other test you’ve ever taken in your life, the right preparation can improve your test results. Data Interpretation Tips


 Data Interpretation can be defined as "the application of statistical procedures to analyze specific observed or assumed facts from a particular study". They come as questions in tests to understand how much a student has understood the subject at hand. In bank entrance exams for data interpretation is used as a means to understand a student's grasp of the subject. It is very important to understand how to interpret data in order to do well in these tests. It is especially important in case of students planning to study finance and mathematics. An interpretation question will usually contain a chart or a graph. It will also contain some data or even sets of data which the student has to analyze and come to a conclusion. When you are solving an interpretation question you will have to understand what the graph or chart means. If there are numbers involved (most probably they will be) you will have to find out what they stand for. Next, you need to draw a data set that represents the graph or chart in question. Now you have to look at the data set and come to a conclusion about what it means. To do well in interpretation questions, practicing them regularly is extremely important.
     Data may be represented in a number of complex forms, and hence solving Data Interpretation problems becomes far more difficult. There is no fixed format for solving such problems, and each has to be tackled in its own distinct way. Thus, to answer such questions correctly, it is essential to practice all types of Data Interpretation exercises a number of times, so as to be familiar with all the data presentation types.
Read the data very carefully, as the smallest detail may change the meaning of the question completely. Similarly, the instructions have to be understood carefully to prevent wasting time. Try to understand the data provided carefully, before jumping to answer the questions. The questions are designed to be deceptive, and proper understanding of the requirements is a must. If the Data Interpretation is of the combined variety or if there are more than one data table/charts/graphs, try to understand the relation between the given tables. Be careful of the units used in the tables, and the units in which the answers are provided. A mistake in the units may yield an entirely different answer. Also be careful of whether the answer is required in decimal or percentage. Such errors are very common and easily avoidable.

Number System





We use ten symbols 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 called digits to represent any number. This is the decimal system where we use the numbers 0 to 9. 0 is called insignificant digit.

Natural numbers
Counting numbers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. .. are known as natural numbers.
The set of all natural numbers can be represented by N= {1, 2, 3, 4, 5…}

Whole numbers
If we include 0 among the natural numbers, then the numbers 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 … are called whole numbers.
The set of whole number can be represented by W= {0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5…}
Every natural number is a whole number but 0 is a whole number which is not a natural number.

Integers
All counting numbers and their negatives including zero are known as integers.
The set of integers can be represented by Z or I = {…-4, -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 …}

Positive Integers
The set I+ = {1, 2, 3, 4…} is the set of all positive integers.
Positive integers and natural numbers are synonyms.

Negative Integers
The set I- = {-1, -2, -3…} is the set of all negative integers.
0 is neither positive nor negative.
Non-negative Integers
The set {0, 1, 2, 3…} is the set all non-negative integers.

Rational Numbers
The numbers of the form p/q, where p and q are integers and q ≠ 0, are known as rational numbers, e.g. 4/7, 3/2, -5/8, 0/1, -2/3, etc.
The set of all rational numbers is denoted by Q. i.e. Q ={x: x =p/q; p, q belong to I, q≠0}.
Since every natural number ‘a’ can be written as a/1, every natural number is a rational number.
Since 0 can be written as 0/1 and every non-zero integer ‘a’ can be written as a/1, every integer is a rational number.Every rational number has a peculiar characteristic that when expressed in decimal form is expressible rather in terminating decimals or in non-terminating repeating decimals.
For example, 1/5 =0.2, 1/3 = 0.333…22/7 = 3.1428704287, 8/44 = 0.181818…., etc.

Irrational Numbers
Those numbers which when expressed in decimal from are neither terminating nor repeating decimals are known as irrational number, e.g. √2, √3, √5, Ï€, etc.
Note that the exact value of π is not 22/7. 22/7 is rational while π irrational number.
22/7 is approximate value of π. Similarly, 3.14 is not an exact value of it.

Real Numbers
The rational and irrational numbers combined together are called real numbers,
e.g.13/21, 2/5, -3/7; √3, 4 + √2, etc. are real numbers.
The set of all real numbers is denoted by R.
Note that the sum, difference or product of a rational and irrational number is irrational, e.g. 3+ √2, 4-√3, 2/3-√5, 4√3, -7√5 are all irrational.

Even Numbers
All those numbers
8, 10, etc., are even numbers.

Odd Numbers
All those numbers which are not exactly divisible by 2 are called odd numbers, e.g. 1,
3, 5, 7 etc., are odd numbers.

Prime Numbers
A natural number other than 1 is a prime number if it is divisible by 1 and itself only.
For example, each of the numbers 2, 3, 5, 7 etc., are prime numbers.

Composite Numbers
Natural numbers greater than 1which are not prime, are known as composite numbers.
For example, each of the numbers 4, 6, 8, 9, 12, etc., are composite numbers.



Classification

Verbal classification test which is popularly known as “odd man out” test requires assorting of the items of a given group on the basis of a certain common quality they possess and then spotting the odd one in the group—the stranger out. These questions test the abilities of the candidates to observe the differences and similarities among objects or things. In this type of questions out of 5-6 objects (may be letters, words, numbers or figures) all but one is similar in some respect. You have to sort out which one is different (i.e., does not bear the same characteristics as the others in the group) and that gives you the correct answer. There is no rule of thumb to solve problems of this type. You have to sort each answer choice to find out whether it has any association or connection with the other items of the question. The correct answer choice will be that item which has/does not has an association with the other words. Verbal classification questions may involve alphabet/letter, word or numbers.

Verbal classification is based on homogeneity or similarity between things like objects, pictures, letters, ideas and words. In this test, homogeneous items are grouped together but one will be different in some way. Your task is to identify the thing that does NOT belong to the group. For instance take the group “apple, orange, fruit, banana”. Of course they have many things in common but there is a fine distinction. While apple, orange and banana are specific, ‘fruit’ is a generic term: any fruit.

All probable relationships have to be explored while attempting such tests. Such relationships may be based on
1. Meanings and interpretations
2. Characteristics
3. Common prefixes/suffixes
As far as letter series is concerned, concern is given to
1. Position of letters in the alphabetical order
2. Capital and small letter relationship
3. Vowel-consonant relationship
4. Frequency or omission of letters

      General Awareness has now become an important part of so many mainstream competitive exams. How to Improve Reading Comprehension Skills?

   Reading is all about information. It’s not about the number of words you read, but the amount of value you extract from them. The key to improved reading comprehension isn’t moving your eyes across a page more quickly. It’s about creating a mental framework that helps you process words and ideas. With a bit of practice; anyone can read faster and more productively.
   The ability to improve your reading comprehension depends on at least three factors: your motivation to learn; your concentration skills; and the use of a good reading method. In addition to these three factors, you may also benefit from the tips and strategies given below.
1. Broaden your knowledge - Read newspapers, magazines, books, and professional journals. Become interested in current events. This will help you build a stronger mental framework for ideas and concepts.
2. Create motivation and interest - If there is no in interest, there is no progress. Discuss ideas with your friends, family, coworkers, and classmates. The stronger your interest in the subject, the Greater your comprehension will be.
3. Highlight what you think is most important - If you want to fully understand what you are reading, reading it once is not enough. Highlight the main ideas and review them after you have read the entire piece.
4. Strengthen your vocabulary - Building your vocabulary is a long process, not an event that happens overnight. However, the more you know about the language, the more you will understand. Keep a dictionary handy and look up words that are not familiar.
5. Use a systematic reading method, such as SQ3R! SQ3R stands for
Survey, Question, Read, Recite, and Review.

Easy Ways to Build Vocabulary

        It’s not really all that hard to build an advanced and comprehensive vocabulary. Like many things in life, it’s an ongoing process, and the best part of the process is that there’s virtually infinite room for improvement, which means you’ll just keep getting better and better. Of course you have to work at it. You wouldn’t think that a few months of exercise in your teens would suffice you for the rest of your life, now would you? Well, it’s the same with building your vocabulary – you have to keep at it daily, and pretty soon you’ll find that you have an excellent vocabulary. And right here are a few tips to help you on your way.
     One interesting way to build vocabulary is to actively search for new words in everyday life – and when you do come upon a new word, make sure you absorb it. Take a minute or two to go over it. If you don’t understand its meaning, write it down and check up on it later – there are so many on-line dictionaries and vocabulary sites available on the net that can easily help you with this part. All it takes from you is a few minutes of your time – if you can’t spare that, it’s going to be very difficult for you to build up your vocabulary.
    One of the finest ways to build vocabulary is to read good books. Newspaper gossip columns just don’t cut it – you need to really read at least one good book a week, preferably a classic. This isn’t really as hard as it sounds, and it is far more effective than any other method because you improve your vocabulary while having fun, while reading and interesting piece of literature. Another nice thing is that you absorb both new words and their use unconsciously, meaning that you will tend to use the words learned this way in conversations virtually automatically.
   This doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t make conscious efforts to enhance your vocabulary while reading. When you come upon a new word in a book, write it down in a note books and memorize it. If you don’t understand the meaning, look it up and understand it thoroughly. Then write a small summary of the book, or of a paragraph of the book, making sure you use the new words learned. Over the next few days, try to use those words effectively in conversations, until the new words are an effective and useful part of your vocabulary. Just follow these simple tips and you’ll have an incredible vocabulary.

Bank Recruitment exam 2011

Hello Friends,

Since last 10-12 years the employment on government levels was stopped. Banks have sent thousands of their employees to home under the name of VRS. This happened mostly by computerization. Now when all banks are computerized, there is a new problem in front of banks, the problem of intense competition. The banks today are facing intense competition with newly arrived private banks and to maintain their market share, banks have to become more customers centric. They have to offer all financial services to the customer at a one-stop point. No wonder that now nationalized banks need expert manpower to cope up with this competition. That’s why new recruitment for near about eighty five thousand posts is expected in 2011 and in coming five years it will increase up to five and half lacs.
Nineteen nationalized banks have given the responsibility of taking Common Written Exam to IBPS i.e. Institute Of Banking Personnel selection. IBPS is the premier Autonomous Institute

. These 19 banks offered IBPS the job of recruiting right persons for the posts like probationary officers, management trainees, clerks, cashiers, IT officers, agriculture officers, marketing managers etc. The first Common exam called CWE will be conducted by IBPS on 18th Sept. 2011 for the posts of probationary officers and management trainees. After this exam on the basis of CWE performance of the job aspirants, IBPS will issue score cards for job in banks with a validity of one year valid from the date of issue of the Score Cards. The banks that need new manpower will call applications from these eligible candidates and will select them through interview process and group discussions as per their need. In other words, these nineteen banks will recruit candidates directly without any other written exam. An announcement of CWE for the posts of clerks and cashiers is expected soon.
For the CWE for the posts of probationary officers and management trainees you have to apply online. Last date of submission of your application is 1st Aug. 2011.

Nature of Exam

For written exam there will be two parts. First part will be objective/multiple choice questions. There will be five subjects and time allotted will be 150 minutes.
1] Reasoning – 50 Questions -50 Marks
2] Quantitative Aptitude – 50 Questions -50 Marks
3] General Awareness with Special Reference to Banking - 50 Questions -50 Marks
4] Computer Knowledge - 50 Questions -50 Marks
5] English Language - 50 Questions - 25 Marks
In descriptive paper there will be one paper on English Composition for 25 marks and allotted time will be 60 minutes.
In total this exam will be of 250 marks. For every wrong answer 0.25 marks will be deducted.
